The Party [A Short Story]

Hershey’s bars. Shopping malls. And Nicolas Cage movies. This isn’t your typical post-apocalyptic story.

If you want to know what’s going to cause the end of the world, then this story ain’t for you. But if you want to see how people deal with it, then come on in.

So, here we are. Eight months into whatever the heck this is. And stuck at the mall.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be happy to spend time at the mall, but I’m so fucking grateful this is where Cakey-Lips Guy wanted to go for our day date. I don’t even want to imagine what happened to people who got stuck at home or who lived out in the boonies when the snow started.

I actually worry about my sister and her family a lot. It’s easier to focus on my friends because I have a pretty good idea of where they were when it happened. But Mags gave birth just a couple days before the boom and, aside from visiting her in the hospital, I hadn’t seen or heard much from her or her husband. She might’ve still been in the hospital or they might’ve made it home. Or they might’ve driven to our parents’ place in PA. But would they have made it or would their car have broken down? And what then?

With no way to contact anyone, I just have to hope they’re all okay. Adam always seemed resourceful, so I’m sure he had prepared for something like this. Well, not quite like this, but you know what I mean.

As I write this down, I realize I don’t even know who I’m writing this for. Will it be for our kids? Will it be for the people who rescue us next month? Or will it be for the ones who discover our preserved bodies, like some sort of frozen Pompeii?
