Jennie fumbled with her car keys, scrambling to find the right button. Once inside, she locked the doors and looked around. Steve was nowhere in sight. She sighed with relief and said, “Frank, take me to The Clover.”

“Yes, ma’am,” the friendly Southern voice spoke from the Honda’s speakers. “Would you like anything else?”

“Uhh…” It was only then that Jennie realized she was freezing and her feet were burning. “Yeah, crank the heat. Especially on my feet. Turn on some music, too, please. You know the station.”

“You got it, missy.”

Good ol’ Frank, Jennie thought.

As she started to warm, Jennie realized she’d made a huge mistake. She should have stayed home, not given Steve a reason to fight. Plus, what was she thinking? She didn’t want anyone to see her like this. But it was Sarah. This wasn’t the first time she’d seen Jennie’s face or body busted up like this. If she could just get to Sarah, she’d be okay.

Jennie snuggled down into the heated seat and took a look in the side mirror. “Frank? Can you adjust my mirror a bit to the right?” The mirror made a soft whirring noise. Oh no.
